Brooklyn, NY: Last Remaining Dutch Farmhouse

Maria Lott Lefferts is reputed to have cooked up some of the tastiest Apees in all of old Brooklyn. These wafer type cookies flavored with nutmeg, cinnamon, mace, caraway and rosewater will be the first things cooked in the beehive oven that is part of the new Outdoor Kitchen Exhibit at the Lefferts Historic House. Constructed in the style of late 18th and early 19th century Hudson Valley and New England hearths and ovens, the exhibit allows visitors to experience kitchen work and food ways typical to the region over the last two centuries. The exhibition, situated in the garden of the 18th century Dutch farmhouse, will allow educators at Lefferts to use cooking to teach environmental history.

The public will get their first chance to experience the working ovens and hearth during the annual Harvest Fair at the Lefferts Historic House, Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, from 1 – 4 p.m. both days. Future events utilizing the new exhibit include a hands-on workshop for visitors and demonstrations by a costumed interpreter representing an African-American woman cooking at an open hearth in Flatbush circa 1800.
